It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Singa
Sino Friendship Association (SSFA) on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.
Singapore and China have close relations with many common interests. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1990, the leaders of our two countries have met very often and enjoyed close personal and working relations. Strong linkages and cooperation have also been institutionalised in various fields such as economics, education, health, culture, tourism and sports. I firmly believe that our excellent ties will grow even stronger in the years to come.
Our close people-to-people ties have been a key factor in the strong Singapore-China relationship. In this regard, the SSFA has done very well in facilitating exchanges and providing networking opportunities for our peoples. Through active cooperation with its counterpart China-Singapore Friendship Association, the SSFA has contributed to our understanding of the dynamic changes in China, while at the same time representing Singapore's interests and perspectives.
China is emerging as an economic powerhouse. This will bring new opportunities for Singapore. This will also require adjustments on our part. The SSFA has an important role in this process.
I would like to commend Mr Sia Yong, President of SSFA for his tireless efforts in bringing Singaporeans and Chinese closer together. The success of the SSFA as a bridge of friendship would not be possible without committed volunteers like Mr Sia. His leadership of the SSFA since 1993 deserves recognition. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, may I congratulate the SSFA for its achievements and wish them further success in the years to come.
