At the night of 21st March 2018, SCFA successfully organized a welcome reception to the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, HE Mr Hong Xiaoyong, at Shangri-la Hotel. The reception was also marked as celebration of the Chinese Spring Festival. HE Mr Hong and his wife, Mrs Yu Weiwei attended the Dinner. SCFA Honorary Advisors, Prof Wang Gungwu, Prof Su Guaning, Dr Ker Sin Tze attended the Dinner. SCFA President Prof Phua Kok Khoo and wife, Mrs Doreen Liu also attended the Dinner.
Prof Phua gave a speech at the Dinner. Firstly, he delivered warm welcome to HE Mr Hong Xiaoyong and Mrs Hong. He said, SCFA have been actively involved in promoting better understanding and collaborations between the public as well as private organizations of the two nations since it was established 25 years ago. SCFA will continue to work harder in strengthening the relations between Singapore and China.
HE Mr Hong expressed his gratitude towards the guests as well as the organizer. He also delivered new year wishes towards all the guests. He praised SCFA for organizing varieties of event and efforts in promoting people-to-people relations between Singapore and China. Along with the Belt and Road Initiative, he believed that Singapore and China will work more closely. As the Chinese Ambassador to Singapore, he looked forward to work together with Singapore friends in every sector, in meantime, working harder to cultivate deeper friendship and more cooperation between two countries, together building a better future.
At the reception, Prof Phua presented the SCFA commemorative magazine - Hu Xue Hu Jian, as a welcome gift to HE Mr Hong. Guests from the Chinese Embassy such as Chargé d'Affaires Mr Fang Xinwen, Counsellor and Consul General Mr Wang Jiarong, Counsellors and officials, together with SCFA Vice-Presidents Mr Ung Gim Sei, Mr Jumabhoy Ameerali, Mr Loke Gim Tay, Honorary Secretary Mr Ng Yan Huay, and SCFA committee members and members, and representatives from other societies, around 100 persons graced the function. The Dinner ended at 9.45pm.
