The International Conference and Exhibition on Plague Fighter Dr Wu Lien-Teh was held at the Chui Huay Lim Club from 5 to 12 April 2014. It was jointly organized by the Singapore China Friendship Association (SCFA), Institute of Advanced Studies and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University and the Dr Wu Lien-Teh Society, Penang. The event was also supported by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Singapore, the Tan Kah Kee International Society, Harbin Medical University and the Chui Huay Lim Club.
Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Health and H.E. Duan Jielong, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Singapore graced the above event as Guest-of-Honor and VIP Guest, respectively. We also invited doctors, scholars and documentary producer from Singapore, China and Malaysia to the event. They presented and discussed on the legacy of Dr Wu Lien-Teh, the importance of Dr Wu Lien-Teh's contributions to China's medical services and public health. Dr Wu Lien-Teh's great-grandniece Ms Alison was invited to give a presentation on Dr Wu's Family Tree.
The Exhibition was held from 5 to 12 April 2014. It exhibited old photos and books written on the contributions of Dr Wu Lien-Teh.
Dr Phua Kok Khoo, President, SCFA, at the Opening Ceremony said that organising such an International Conference and Exhibition was to publicize the setting-up of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, as well as to promote the legacy of Dr. Wu Lien-Teh.
A bronze sculpture of Dr Wu Lien-Teh donated by Mr Loke Gim Tay, SCFA Vice President, was on display at the Exhibition. It would then be donated to the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University.
A week-long event was a success, attracting nearly 200 participants.
We are very honored to invite Professor Zheng Yongnian, an acknowledged China expert and Director of East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore, to deliver a talk titled "Third Plenum of the 18 Communist Party Central Committee and Future of China".
"Plague Fighter" Dr. Wu Lien-Teh was a Malayan-born Chinese and the first medical student of Chinese descent to study at University of Cambridge. He modernized China's medical services and medical education, and was also the first Malayan Chinese nominated to receive a Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1935.
SCFA will be jointly organizing an International Conference cum Exhibition on Dr Wu Lien Teh on 5 April 2014 at Chui Huay Lim Club. Details of the aforementioned International Conference cum Exhibition are as follows:
