Professor Phua Kok Khoo has been elected as a Fellow of American Physical Society (APS) in December 2009. The American Physical Society (APS) is regarded as the world's most prestigious professional society of physicists. Election to the Fellowship of APS is a rigorous process, and being conferred as a Fellow is an honour that represents the highest recognition in the physics and scientific community for professional achievement.
Professor K K Phua is currently Founding Director of Institute of Advanced Studies at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Adjunct Professor of the Department of Physics at National University of Singapore (NUS) and Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of World Scientific Publishing Company. Prof Phua is a theoretical high energy physicist and he did some interesting and useful work in particle physics, particularly in the field of phenomenology in high energy collisions. Many of his scientific papers were published in well-known international academic journals.
The APS Fellowship is an honor bestowed to the distinguished few physicists who have made outstanding achievements in scientific research, and may also have made significant contributions in advancing science education and promoting international collaboration. In 1970, Prof Phua was appointed by the then Nanyang University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rayson Huang, to join its physics department. During that period, Prof Phua established the Theoretical High Energy Physics research group, thus opening up international liaison with some of the world's leading universities and physicists―such as Nobel laureate Professor C N Yang, and former Director General of CERN in Geneva, Professor Léon Van Hove―who visited Nanyang University to conduct workshops and lectures. Prof Phua also led the research of theoretical physics at the National University of Singapore (NUS), advancing it to become the main research group in NUS. Four years ago, he was invited as a Founding Director to establish Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) as part of the research initiatives of Nanyang Technological University (NTU). One of his other main role is to invite top scientists―many of whom are Nobel laureates―to Singapore to conduct important workshops and conferences.
Professor Phua also plays an active role in serving and contributing to the society. He holds numerous key appointments―he is Chairman of Tan Kah Kee Foundation, President of Singapore-China Business Association, President of Singapore China Friendship Association, Founding President of the Imperial College Alumni Association of Singapore, Vice-Chairman of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Council, and Chairman and Council Member of several junior colleges and secondary schools in Singapore. In 2008, he had organized an exhibition-forum titled "Joint Exhibition on the History of Chinese-Medium Schools in Singapore and Malaysia".
Professor Phua is also conferred honorary professorships of some renowned universities in China.
